Coppice Audio Modular BG (BGM) Audiophile loudspeaker

What Is the Best Loudspeaker?

At Coppice Audio, we believe the best loudspeaker is the one that brings your music to life — naturally, dynamically, and emotionally.

Our BG Series represents the pinnacle of our audiophile range. It began with the classic BG1 and BG3 — fully enclosed, solid timber cabinets that combine timeless craftsmanship with outstanding performance. These speakers are ideal for situations where placement is limited, especially when they need to be positioned near a front wall. Despite their compact footprints, both models deliver an expansive soundstage, thanks to our modified Lowther midrange drivers and solid wood construction.

Are Open Baffle Speakers Any Good?

Absolutely — when done right, they can be exceptional.

At Coppice, we constantly strive to push sonic boundaries. That’s why the BG series has evolved into the Modular BG (BGM) system. While we've long admired the beautiful, natural sound of Lowther drivers, removing them from an enclosure and placing them in an open baffle has revealed even more: enhanced air, separation between instruments, and greater detail. The result is a more open, spacious, and lifelike sound.

What Is a Modular Sound System?

The BGM is designed to grow with you and your listening space.

This modular approach means you always enjoy an exceptional soundstage, whether you choose a single or dual bass module configuration. Start with one — ideal for smaller spaces — and upgrade later by adding another for deeper, more impactful low-end extension. A single bass module typically reaches around 30Hz in-room, while a twin configuration can extend to 20Hz or lower, depending on the environment.

Each module includes two interchangeable ports: a 30Hz port for tighter, punchier bass, and a 27Hz port for greater depth and extension. Flexibility meets fidelity.

Tuning the Sound to Your Space
Every room is different — and every listener has their own taste. That’s why our crossover networks use high-quality screw terminals. This design allows you to easily swap components, such as capacitors or resistors, enabling fine-tuning of the system to better suit your room acoustics or personal sonic preferences. Whether you're chasing a touch more warmth or a bit more sparkle, this flexibility gives you the tools to truly personalize your sound.

What Material Is Best for a Speaker Cabinet?

We’ve tested everything — and the answer is clear.

While our BGM cabinets are now available in more affordable plywood builds (paired with solid wood baffles), our testing confirms that solid ash offers superior sonic performance. It produces deeper, cleaner bass and an overall more musical presentation. Though more expensive, solid ash delivers a richness and tonal quality that simply can't be matched by MDF, plywood, or even other hardwoods.

Positioning Open Baffle Speakers

Open baffle speakers shine when given room to breathe.

To perform at their best, they need to be placed further into the room — ideally away from the front and side walls. If your space is more limited, our acoustic treatments can help mitigate reflections and improve clarity. Alternatively, the original BG1 or BG3 - shown below may be a better fit for tighter spaces, offering excellent performance with more flexible placement.
